Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Breast reconstruction rebuilds a breast’s shape after a mastectomy. Although a reconstructed breast does return the natural sensations, the surgery offers a result that looks like a breast.

Breast reconstruction may also include adding a nipple, changing the shape or size of the reconstructed breast, or operating on the opposite breast for a better match.

I use tissue expanders and “permanent” breast implants to reconstruct breasts. Tissue expanders are inflatable implants that stretch out the tissues to create a mound that simulates a breast.They can be placed at the time of the mastectomy or any time after a mastectomy. It takes about 2 months to get to a “C” cup. A second small procedure replaces the expander with a natural feeling silicone implant. A few months later, a nipple can be reconstructed using skin located at the apex of the mound. The final touch is medical grade tattooing to give the nipple reconstruction and surrounding skin the color of a natural nipple and areola.
